On idleness,
and why we bill per second

Most billing feels like a threat. We wanted ours to feel like an answer — so we started measuring the things that actually cost us money, and we wrote down what we found.

Idle compute is the quiet thief of cloud bills. We count seconds because customers also count seconds — the time between “deploy” and “live,” the time between a request and a response, the time between a bug report and a fix. This essay is about how a per-second meter changed not just what we charge, but how we build.
